America’s gun control laws are currently entrenched in political gridlock.
Which means the public’s devastation over mass shootings — like the one which took place at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon on Thursday (Oct. 1) — and widespread calls for change are consistently marred by the exhausting reality that ultimately little to nothing is being done to stop gun-related violence. And more than 30 American lives are taken each and every day by guns as a result of the legislative stagnation on the issue.
Ian Somerhalder — star of “The Vampire Diaries” and founding namesake of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation — is pitching in his considerable star power to try and influence supporters to rise up and demand that a change finally be made. And he had a nifty platform for his message, too.
In a live Facebook video Ian made on Friday (Oct. 2) in between takes on the set of “TVD” Season 7’s production, the actor-slash-advocate issued a call for his fans to speak up and speak loudly on both climate change and gun control legislation.
While promoting Know Tomorrow, an ongoing college student-centric action on climate change event, Somerhalder made his plea for students to fight for stricter gun control in addition to demanding adequate environmental protection measures.
“I don’t know if anyone [else] is so sick and tired of schools being bombarded with bullets and guns,” he said. “There’s no need to make our educational institutions dangerous places. This stops right now, today. Raise your voices.”
I have added photos of Ian and Nikki attending the Heifer International’s 4th Annual Beyond Hunger Gala last week to the gallery.
Hollywood’s A-listers are showing their support for animal conservation at a gala Beverly Hills charity event sponsored by WildAid, a San Francisco-based wildlife organization active throughout the world. The affair (An Evening in Africa) which will be held at the Montage Hotel on Nov. 7 comes on the heels of the Sept. 28 Emmy awards in which the organization is a contender for the category of Outstanding Nature Programming for its film “Saving Africa’s Giants with Yao Ming—a story about the awareness of threats against wildlife, from the elephant poaching crisis to the recent killing of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe. An animal rights advocate long before the horror and outrage over Cecil the Lion’s death, WildAid is a maverick in the field of saving threatened and endangered wildlife, such as lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos, sharks, mantas and other marine species are suffering and dying. Many face near extinction, due to illegal trade, poaching, gaming and other inhumane activity. WildAid’s goal is to end the global trade that’s driving this slaughter by educating and persuading consumers never to buy illegal wildlife products. When the buying stops, the killing can too.
The non-profit organization has many celebrity followers featured in past and upcoming WildAid PSAs who will be at the bash and include HRH Prince William, Kristin Bauer, David Beckham, Kathryn Bigelow, Sir Richard Branson, Jackie Chan, Chevy & Jayni Chase*, Michael Cudlitz, Bo Derek & John Corbett*, Leo DiCaprio, Minnie Driver, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, Pau Gasol, Jane Goodall, Kate Hudson, Taylor Kitsch, Johnny Knoxville, Yao Ming, Edward Norton, Lupita Nyong’o, Hayden Panettiere, Joaquin Phoenix, Maggie Q & Dylan McDermott*, Jeremy Renner, Ian Somerhalder, and Amy Tan. One major supporter, Walking Dead star Michael Cudlitz says of WildAid, “When the buying stops, the killing can too. It’s not just a slogan, it’s a fact. Because of the work being done by WildAid, my great grandchildren will grow up in a world that still has actual elephants, rhinos and sharks. I couldn’t be more proud to play a small part in this work.” Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o who journeyed to Kenya with WildAid and was prominently featured in the international media, including Good Morning America, BBC News, People, Hello! and Vogue, is advocating globally for elephants and other endangered species.
A top-rated wildlife conservation charity according to Charity Navigator rankings, WildAid has worked to reduce the demand for such products as shark fin soup, with consumption in China plummeting by as much as 70% in recent years.
Once again, Salt Lake Comic Con has been blessed by the gods of Marvel.

The group will join an immense list of celebrity guests for this year’s con, including Ian Somerhalder, Felicia Day, Jenna-Louise Coleman, Sean Astin and more. There will also be 33 other celebrity guests who between them representing a variety of hit film and TV series including “Doctor Who,” “The Vampire Diaries,” the “Harry Potter” movies, “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” trilogies, and more. A special treat for Utah fans will be the return of Rob Paulsen and Jess Harnell, cartoon voice actors known for shows such as “The Animaniacs,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Pinky and the Brain” and more. The two were a hit at this year’s FanX convention, and for Comic Con they’ll be bringing with them Tress MacNeille (Dot on “The Animaniacs,” as well as Daisy Duck and appearances on “The Simpsons,” “Futurama,” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”) and Maurice LaMarche (best known as Yosemite Sam and the Brain on “The Animaniacs” and “Pinky and the Brain.”)
Though photo and autograph opportunities for these guests must be purchased (some of which are already sold out), many of these celebrities will also be speaking at either their own panels or participating in group panels. Visit saltlakecomiccon.com/2015-panel-schedule to get the complete list of times and locations, or download the app to get any schedule changes on-site at the convention.
Though the celebrity panels mostly have long admission lines – guests are recommended to be in line at least an hour early if they want to be certain they’ll get a seat – there are also plenty of other panels that are easier to get into. They cover a variety of different genres, including comics, movie, TV, and video games, with separate panels that focus on audience and creator perspectives.
There are also more practical panels, focusing on aspects of cosplay and how to get the most out of your writing and art. These panels are divided by genre, and are generally mixed in with the fan panels. To narrow the three days down to the topics you want, use the schedule tags located on the right side of the schedule part.
Three-day and Saturday only passes are still available in limited numbers, as well as a limited number of Gold passes (which include a gift pack and early vendor hall entry in addition to three-day admission). For more information or to purchase tickets, visit saltlakecomiccon.com/slcc-2015-tickets. Admission can also be purchased at the door, but it will cost $10 more than tickets purchased online.
Ian Somerhalder is ready to take the next big step with wife Nikki Reed.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Vampires Diaries star, 36, discussed having children in the future.
“Oh, hell yes! Absolutely,” he said — but joked he likes the process more than the result. “You know, it’s all about practice … It’s not practice makes perfect — it’s perfect practice.”
While the couple may not have any human kids yet, they’re parents to nine — yes, nine! — fur babies.
But Somerhalder is so excited about one day having real kids, that he may not even wait for Reed, 26, to carry their child.
“I’m actually pregnant right now,” he joked.
Kids may be in their future, but for now the couple, who tied the knot in April, is enjoying newlywed life.
“It’s the most incredible thing to be happy and secure in something,” he added. “It’s a pretty crazy time and place to bring a child into this turbulent and insane world — but I really can’t wait to do it.”
